Described as a “national treasure” and “New Zealand’s most indispensable ensemble” (William Dart, NZ Herald), NZTrio is renowned for its eclectic repertoire, outstanding talent and warm kiwi stage presence. Any preconceptions of classical music being stuffy or intimidating are smashed by edgy repertoire, venue ambience, and post-concert manaakitanga.
Bringing together three incredibly accomplished artists: Amalia Hall (violin), Ashley Brown (cello) and Somi Kim (piano), every NZTrio performance powerfully reaffirms the importance and cathartic nature of a live musical experience in today’s digital world.

Orpheus Trio: Mendelssohn & more
Orpheus Trio presents a diverse program combining rarely heard discoveries alongside well-known masterworks of the piano trio repertoire. The magnificent Mendelssohn D minor is the centrepiece of this concert, which is often praised as one of his finest works.
Formed in 2012 and comprising pianist Helena Kernaghan, violinist Kaori Sparks and cellist Sam Goble, the trio are an interstate, rural-dwelling ensemble calling both Albury and Castlemaine home.
Argyle Trio: Beethoven & Dvořák
The Argyle Trio (Laurence Matheson, Wilma Smith and Matthia Balzat) came together just before the pandemic hit. They took their name from Argyle St in Hobart which runs down the side of the Hobart Town Hall where the trio played its first concert.
The program starts with C minor Beethoven and features one of Dvořák's most-loved works, the "Dumky" Trio. Dumky is plural for Dumka, the Czech term for a ballad, elegy or lament. Essentially a series of six Dumky, the trio makes the most of the expressive and singing cello throughout this beautiful piece of pure Bohemian Romanticism.
