Matt Laing Awarded the
2024 Continuo Commission

The work will be “…a companion piece to my string quartet, “Shapes”. It’ll be a piece with short-ish movements that explore textures inspired by the central theme of “streams”; of thought, of light, of water, of smoke, of electricity.

Please join us in congratulating Matt Laing and Australian Wind Quintet on being awarded the Continuo Commissioning Circle’s 2024 commission.

Composer and violist Matt Laing has been described as “one of the most exciting young composers…” and by the Sydney Arts Guide as “obviously an intelligent, effective composer…(displaying) the ability to create simple, simply beautiful and fresh ways… to touch us
deeply”.

His new work, entitled “Streams”, for the Australian Wind Quintet will act as companion piece to his string quartet “Shapes”, which was premiered by the well-loved Flinders Quartet in 2017.

“It’ll be a piece with short-ish movements that explore textures inspired by the central theme of “streams”; of thought, of light, of water, of smoke, of electricity.”

The Continuo Board and its Directors would like to thank all the other applicants for your outstanding submissions. We recognise the passion and creativity that went into your submissions and encourage you to reapply for future rounds.

Finally, we extend our gratitude to this year’s Selection Panel for their kind and thoughtful consideration of each candidate. Thank you to Paul Dean, Eliza Shephard & Sam Torrens for their time and expertise in making this difficult decision.
