Omega Ensemble: Brahms, Lefrançois & Dohnányi

15 December 2022 @ 14:30 - 16:00

$49 – $69

Soaring melodies and unabashed melodrama with works by Brahms, Dohnányi, and a world premiere from French composer Laurent Lefrançois.

It was the unstoppable pianist Clara Schumann that secured the success of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor when she premiered the work in 1862.  While the brooding Quartet may at first appear restrained, the work develops into the soaring melodies and sumptuous textures imbued in all the works on this program, culminating in the work’s vivacious final moment.

The mighty music of Brahms was a great influence on the younger Ernö Dohnányi, and what the Hungarian composer’s work lacks in recognition, it makes up with unabashed melodrama and romantic passion. His colossal Sextet features some of the most glorious writing for French Horn, and for this performance, the Ensemble is joined by Nicolas Fleury, Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Marking the finale of the 2022 Season, Omega Ensemble will premiere a new sextet from French composer Laurent Lefrançois, whose rambunctious works are marked by colourful twists and turns, intricate ensemble work and sweetly satisfying melodies.
