Early Music Quartet: Telemann
15 August @ 13:00 - 14:00
FreeIn 1737 Georg Phillip Telemann left Hamburg to visit Paris, where he remained for eight months. On receiving a publishing privilege in 1738, he presented his Nouveaux quatuors en six suites à une flûte traversière, un violon, une basse de viole, ou violoncelle, et basse continue. These quartets were immediately recognised as outstanding chamber music; there were 294 orders on the subscription list, many from France and the rest from throughout Europe. The Nouveaux quatuors pay homage to both French elegance and Italian brilliance; Telemann was writing for performance by the finest musicians in Paris. Musical dialogue is a feature of the quartets, eloquently displaying the colour, virtuosity, and individual character of each instrument.
