Featuring three multi-award-winning works by Melbourne composers Linda Kouvaras and Jane Hammond, Of Birds and Monuments is the result of unique collaborations with Indigenous artists.

Kouvaras’ epic Herring Island Piano Sonata for piano, recorded sound and narrator utilises text by N’arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM, telling powerful stories behind Indigenous landmarks within Melbourne, narrated by Tiriki Onus. The Buluwirri Bugaja Piano Suite, uses text by Onus and archival film footage about his trailblazing Indigenous rights activist grandfather Bill Onus. Hammond’s Songs of the Helmeted Honeyeater for saxophone, piano, sound and film tells the story of our endangered Victorian avifaunal emblem, the Helmeted Honeyeater, and the efforts to save this species.
