The word ‘minimal’ was first used as a musical classification in 1972 by Tom Johnson. The concert experiences he referred to featured few musical elements and emphasised how easily minimal ideas move between the aural, the visual, and the verbal. Since 1972, the minimalist music movement has evolved and expanded, with the common thread being the reduction of materials to a minimum, the simplification of procedures and an immediate apparentness to listeners. We are returned to our roots, to the basic elements of melody, modality, and rhythm.
This concert in the Minimal series is for saxophone quartet with occasional bass clarinets.
