Armstrong ANAM Recital: Bach, Szymanowski & Brahms
Tue 19 September @ 15:30 - 16:30
Free – $10James Armstrong (violin)
"Bach’s Sonata No. 2 in A minor BWV 1003 is spiritually and intellectually provocative. For me, the solo sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach allow me to explore my musical voice and it’s such a pleasure to be able to find something new in music every time I come back to it, whether I’m listening or playing.
Szymanowski’s ‘Mythes’, Op. 30 for violin and piano are musical illustrations of the supernatural - alluding to the myths of the Fountain of Arethusa and Narcissus - in Szymanowski’s unique style which uses elements of German Romanticism and French Impressionism.
To complete the program, Louisa Breen and I will perform Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108 - a staple of the sonata repertoire. This sonata captures Brahms in a nutshell - rich melodic and harmonic writing for both piano and violin, conveying ideas of human experiences such as regret, love, joy, and struggle." - James Armstrong"
