Wed 31 May @ 11:00 - 12:00
$10 – $15SOUNDBITE: SPEAK NO EVIL
Experience the art and influence of improvisation in a unique musical journey spanning centuries, featuring works by Mozart, Messiaen, Takemitsu, and Shorter.
There is a strong legacy of great composer/improvisers throughout history: Mozart would spontaneously perform half-hour encores at the piano, indistinguishable from his written compositions, while Messiaen held the position of organist at the Holy Trinity Church in Paris for 60 years – a post which required daily improvisation. Takemitsu, deeply influenced by Messiaen, finds similar flow and unpredictability using precise instrumental instructions, creating a musical language that would ultimately inspire Wayne Shorter – famous jazz saxophonist – in his own improvisatory style.
This concert is dedicated to Shorter who passed away in March this year at age 89, leaving behind his own inspiring musical legacy.
