Rather than shying away from the unique trio of clarinet, violin and piano, Bartók embraces what makes these instruments different by bringing them together in the opening work of this concert, Contrasts.

Combining three instruments he played growing up – horn, violin and piano – Brahms’ Horn Trio is a deeply personal reflection on the composer’s life at the time. Having recently lost his mother, deep emotion is felt throughout the work – even in the more lively moments.
