Dominic Flynn completes Pickett, the 2025 Commission

“This work explores the transformative nature of musical transcription, particularly in regard to Maria Logan’s Song of the Aborigines of Van Diemen’s Land (c. 1836) which pairs a transcription of an Indigenous Tasmanian song with pastoral piano accompaniment. In Pickett, Logan’s accompaniment is atomised and reconstructed into material of varying extremities, parodying the transcription’s failure to either accurately preserve or somehow anglicise the original music.” – Dominic Flynn

Dominic Flynn reports that he has finished –  put the “double bar line” – on his piece Pickett!! He expects that the piece will no-doubt change in subtle ways ahead of the premiere in September (adding guitar fingerings, working on some multiphonic possibilities, etc), but aside from these scoring details, the piece is “done” (as “done” as a piece can be without a performance!).

In the coming weeks, he will start workshopping each part individually with the performers, and they will all get together closer to the premiere to rehearse.

Watch for more news and photos of these workshops and rehearsals in future posts.

Dominic explains his motivation for writing the piece:

“Titled after my paternal grandmother’s surname, Pickett treats Logan’s transcription as a metaphor through which to reflect on the recent discovery of my family’s Palawa (Indigenous Tasmanian) ancestry and the similarly disparate makeup of our identity.”
